Częstochowa – welcome to the city of a miracle

Częstochowa is called a spiritual capital of Poland. The city is a centre of the cult of the Virgin Mary in Poland, and the icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa is known for its miraculous defence of Jasna Góra. What other stories are hidden in this place?

The history of Czestochowa dates back to the thirteenth century, and the city developed rapidly just in the next century, owing its glory days to the location near the route connecting the two regions- Małopolska and Wielkopolska. In the fifteenth century, on the outskirts of Czestochowa, the Pauline monastery of Jasna Góra was built. The building, added in 1994 to the list of history monuments, played a huge role in the Polish history. During the Swedish invasion, the enemy troops have besieged Jasna Góra for two months, and then they had to retreat at the end of December, 1655. The Polish king John II Casimir entrusted the country to the icon kept in the monastery. Today, the miraculous image of Our Lady of Czestochowa is the destination of the Poles’ pilgrimage, and Jasna Góra monastery is the centre of the cult of the Virgin Mary in Poland.

The sacred and green soul of Częstochowa, what is worth seeing

Jasna Gora monastery and basilica are undoubtedly the most famous and the most often visited monument. In Czestochowa, you can easily find many other sacred objects, which should not be skipped during the trip. The most interesting of them are: St. Jacob church on Bieganski Square, which was built as an Orthodox church, as well as the oldest temple in the city – fourteenth-century St. Zygmunt church on Daszynski Square. An interesting attraction is Miniature Park Złota Gora, which presents miniatures of sanctuaries from all over the world created by the artists from Kraków at a scale of 1:25. While walking around Czestochowa, it is impossible to pass by almost 2-km long Avenue of the Holy Virgin Mary surrounded by beautiful houses. Noteworthy are also: a unique Museum of Match Production with the only European machine park running from the 30s of the twentieth century and Archeological Reserve of Lusatian culture. Czestochowa also presents tourists its green face – Jasna Gora Parks are a real enclave, and mountaineering fans can start a trip on one of the trails leading through the Krakow-Czestochowa Upland.
